“Long Live RF”

The ZeeVee team spends a lot of time talking about our AVoIP signal distribution products as the number of sophisticated applications requiring the highest video resolution, interactivity and near zero latency seem to grow exponentially. However, truth be told, as much as 95% of the market depends on RF (radio frequency) modulation to broadcast content from sources to screens in venues. We haven’t forgotten this or our commitment to our long-standing customers in the RF market.

You may remember RF was the platform on which we founded ZeeVee in 2007. At that time, exciting new online media, such as Netflix and Hulu, were being made available to consumers. However, you could not watch this content on TV. It was our initial goal as a company to create a solution to make it easier to watch this content in a more comfortable environment.

As we set about this task, we noticed that a specific commercial segment was driving the call for a similar solution—sports bars. These venues would buy consumer grade encoders to feed off-the-shelf displays throughout their establishments via RF modulation over a single coax cable. Answering this opportunity, we adapted a consumer technology and tailored it for a commercial application—adding robustness, reliability and a higher degree of scalability. In a very real way, NFL Sunday Ticket from DirecTV played a major role in the development of our first product offerings – and our success as a company.

The fact remains that RF modulation is still the most cost-effective way to broadcast content to the screen from a finite number of sources to a virtually unlimited number of screens. It may not be as glamorous as its AVoIP signal distribution younger sibling, but it is as reliable and has been refined over 75 years. It just works.

It is important to note that RF modulation is not merely hanging in there in the marketplace. Its future is quite bright. Currently, it delivers programming in ATSC 2.0, the standard in which most over-the-air content is broadcast. However, in the coming years, it will also deliver 4K broadcast content in the next generation ATSC 3.0 standard. When this happens, it will be a big driver for television sales for consumers and commercial spaces as a large audience will want to take advantage of RF’s next chapter. You can read more about our RF modulation products in the “Technology Spotlight” section of this newsletter.

As you know, we are very excited about our AVoIP product offerings and meeting the demands of customers and their applications. We remain equally excited about our huge prospects in the RF arena. We take great pride in being the only manufacturer that can deliver multimedia content over fiber, CATx and coax, while offering a variety of innovative, cost-effective and easy to install AVoIP and RF distribution platforms.

Happily we can, and will continue to, have it both ways.

Thank you and stay well,

Bob Michaels
CEO, ZeeVee

Reality Interactive is a multi-award winning, retail technology and design agency. The firm specializes in creating and managing innovative retail experiences using touchscreen displays, digital signage, digital media and a full suite of interactive and creative technologies. Reality is currently using ZeeVee RF modulation solutions for 200 Charter Communications’ Spectrum store locations.

Let’s Talk RF Modulation
Currently, there is no AV technology more prolific than RF modulation delivered over coax cable, be it in the home, hospital, sports bar, school, house of worship, hospitality or entertainment setting. It’s safe to assume that if TV programming is being delivered to TVs, you are witnessing RF at work.

We currently offer a full range of RF modulation products from standard to high definition and from single channel to high density modular components. ZeeVee’s AV over RF solutions are designed for the world’s most deployed RF modulation standards, QAM and DVB-T/C, and are the most affordable, reliable and widely-used solution for high-quality distribution of multiple HD and SD sources to almost any number of locations. ZeeVee’s deep expertise in digital encoding, including pro AV compression standards, ensures superior quality of transmitted content as well as RF signal compatibility with displays, set-top boxes and similar devices.

Here's a quick rundown of our RF offerings:

HDbridge 2000/3000 Series RF Modulators and Decoders
ZeeVee's HDbridge 2000 and HDbridge 3000 RF modulation products distribute television programming, digital signage and user-generated content efficiently and cost-effectively in tandem with our full line of RF distribution products. They provide the flexibility needed to deliver content at different resolutions, interface types and channel counts.

The HDbridge 2000 distributes multiple channels of video up to 1080p resolution to an unlimited number of displays over almost any distance. These models convert composite, component, VGA, unencrypted HDMI and even HD-SDI sources into a signal that is received by a television's digital tuner (or enable displays without tuners via the ZVSync- see below). With an HDbridge 2000 RF modulator, you can combine multiple units to enable over 100 different sources via a single coax cable—making it an ideal solution for anyone seeking an affordable way to support a large number of displays with dynamic content.

The modular HDbridge 3000 is better suited for AV systems with more than ten sources and is also capable of distributing SD or HD content over RF or IP, providing an extra level of flexibility and a possible means of transitioning from RF to IP should the need arise. Hot-swappable cards allow the mixing and matching of cards with different interfaces and resolutions as needed.

ZyPro Series RF Encoders and Modulators
Our ZeeVee ZyPro Series RF modulation products are robust solutions for the encoding and modulating of up to two component, VGA or analog/digital audio sources, as well as unencrypted HDMI video, into a single RF output with up to 1080p video resolution.

STBi3+ IP and RF Set-Top Box IP
The STBi3+ is a high-performance set-top box that decodes both RF and IP HD content. It supports three compression formats including H.264, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, enabling the instant viewing of channels once it is plugged into the display and connected to a network.

ZvSync HD Digital Tuner / Decoder
The ZvSync HD digital tuner/decoder enables any projector, monitor or other display without a QAM or DVB-T digital tuner to connect to a ZvPro or HDbridge Encoder / RF Modulator. It converts coax cable signals to either HDMI or composite video, is small and easy to mount near a projector and offers digital output over HDMI or analog audio output via an RCA connection.

ZeeVee Electronic Program Guide
The ZeeVee Electronic Program Guide (EPG) delivers an engaging television experience for distributed live television content. It is an annual service that provides television program guide information with support for up to 75 channels. When the ZeeVee EPG device is connected to a ZeeVee RF modulator, real-time programming information is delivered as part of the channel lineup.

The ZeeVee Electronic Program Guide can be configured for local, national and international program information, as well as in-house channels such as a welcome channel, digital signage or locally produced broadcasts. In addition, ZeeVee has licensed an official television programming data provider to — never worry about needing to rely on “scraping” or breaking the law with the ZeeVee EPG.

As we like to say, RF Modulation is not going away any time soon, and we look forward to working with you to take the platform into the future.
