Great question. We have a software release coming that will allow you to program the volume and mute buttons to directly control the TVs in up to three different rooms. We're not trying to be a universal remote, but felt that volume control was a per-room operation that was important to have while driving Zv.
As you might guess, the hardware (the buttons and remote control learning functionality) had to be in place before we shipped, but the computer software isn't scheduled for delivery until a few months for now. We considered pushing that software out with the initial release, but we were concerned about spreading ourselves too thin.
ZvRemote is programmed via ZvBox. ZvBox has an IR transmitter/receiver behind the ZV logo on the front of the box. One puts ZvRemote into 'programming mode' via a key combination, and then puts it in front of ZvBox. ZvBox then programs it via a protocol over IR between ZvBox and ZvRemote.
So how does ZvBox know what IR to program to ZvRemote (your TV remote control's IR codes)? The first release will have a type of 'hand to hand learning', or 'TV remote to ZvBox learning'. The application that runs on the PC (ZvManager) steps the user through a process of first learning the IR codes of the various TV remote controls (specifically TV power, mute, volume up, and volume down). This is done by pointing the TV remote at ZvBox and pressing the appropriate TV remote button. ZvBox sends the received IR codes to ZvManager, who stores them. When all of the codes have been learned and saved by ZvManager, one puts ZvRemote into 'programming mode' and ZvManager tells ZvBox to program the IR codes from the TV remotes to ZvRemote.
In a later release we may add the ability to have one simply input their TV make/model into ZvManager, and have it download the IR codes for that TV make/model from our website. Then ZvManager would have ZvBox program ZvRemote with those codes.
I am sorry that I cannot give you an exact release date for any IR programming functionality. I can tell you that we are working on this functionality and understand that users like yourself would like to have this feature as soon as possible.

I'm considering buying a universal remote but then remembered the ZVBox remote was supposed to be able to control my TV.
I realize you may not be ready to release the full detail but will it be a learning remote via IR or a programmable remote via codes etc.
(I'd like to set the remote to control the TV and BD player at some point).
Can you provide any detail about the future functionality or possible release date?

Thanks, just what i needed to know. I'll look forward to the capability.
